How to store breast milk

Instructions for saving and thawing breast milk

How long does breast milk keep in the refrigerator? What about frozen breast milk or milk at room temperature?

Storage of milk

Date each bag of freezing.

It is very convenient to store your milk in the same container like the one used for the collection. This saves time, reduces the loss of your precious milk and reduces the risk of contamination. Hard bottles, made of glass or plastic, protect your milk better. Many working mothers use freezer bags that are pre-sterilized. They take up less space in the freezer and can be fixed directly to the breast pump.

freezing

Freeze your milk in small quantities (the lowest amount your baby takes during a feeding). Small numbers can be offered each time to avoid waste. Do not refreeze thawed milk. Should the milk of a starved bottle be discarded as recommended for artificial milk? Studies are not clear on the subject.

thawing

Frozen milk can be rapidly thawed under hot (never boiling) water from the tap. Do not thaw the milk in a microwave as this destroys nutrients and creates hot areas that can burn your baby. Frozen milk that has been melted can be stored in a refrigerator for 24 hours. The cream separates and floats on the surface. Gently stir the milk to homogenize before feeding baby.

Tips for freezing or thawing breast milk

  • If you are expressing small amounts of milk several times a day, be sure not to mix the milk portions until they are all cooled in your refrigerator. Never add freshly expressed milk to milk that has already been refrigerated.
  • Do not store breast milk in the refrigerator door. Choose the cooler part of the refrigerator: at the back of the shelf above the crisper.
  • You can use baby bottles or Pump & Save bags to freeze breast milk. Do not fill more than 3/4 of the bottles or containers because the milk increases in volume during freezing.
  • Indicate the date of expression on the bottles or sachets.
  • Do not thaw or heat the breast milk in a microwave oven or boiling water. This will prevent you from losing vitamins and minerals and will avoid the risk of burning your baby.
  • To preserve the components of breast milk, it is best to let it thaw in the refrigerator overnight. You can also pass the bottle or the sachet under warm water (max. 37 ° C).
  • Gently shake the bottle or the Pump & Save bag to homogenize the fat. Avoid shaking milk vigorously.
